Abstract: Western civilisation originated in the age of ancient Greece. The general characteristics of western civilisation have ever suggested their original source from ancient Greek culture, in which, the idea “rationalism” has been viewed as the main property of cultural foundation. This very idea was not only showed upon the western ancient philosophy, the principles and the applications of modern science and technologies, but it also unfolded its ray in the region of western literature and arts. Particularly, the tendency of “rationalism” revealed itself in many periods of western art history. Under a brief historical review and the method of morphological research in visual form, this discussion tried to clarify the idea of “rationalism”, which embodied itself in many masterful works of different historical ages or presented its effects on such aesthetic standards as “imitation” and “ideal” in history. As the result, it will be exhibited clearly the historical evolution of this idea and its relationship with the development of western art and culture.

Abstract: The works by Thomas Wolfe are full of unrestrained feelings and great momentum. The author’s subjective feeling is strong. He employs the techniques of suggestion and symbolism to affect his readers. In the story April, Late April, the hero ceaselessly praises his lover, using appetite, dishes and fruit to express his strong passion, while the heroine is enthusiastically involved in it. The author uses gorgeous language to depict every act and move and every twinkle and smile of the heroine. Every part of “her” body is connected with all the beautiful things in the world. It forms a striking contrast with those indifferent things in the eyes of the hero.

Abstract: The paper aims at exploring Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), precisely, his criticism of the civilized rules by which the World State citizens must abide. Those rules are, characteristically, at odds with the normal human ways of life that the writer textually describes as "savage." The paper intends to examine the two concepts of civilization and savageness as far as Huxley's utopian "brave" world is concerned. Moreover, it tries to underscore, by means of juxtaposing the discussion of the two worlds representing each of the two concepts throughout the second and the third sections of the paper, the irony underlying their new inverted meanings.
